DIY Branding Photography Tips, For Small Business Owners

Not all businesses can afford to invest in professional photography, especially if they are only just starting out!

And, let’s face it, not many people can afford to hire a professional photographer for a whole week or month, to follow them around to create some amazing story-telling images!

However, that doesn't mean you can't create high-quality visuals for your brand, and you are perfectly placed to create images that would not be captured, otherwise.

Why DIY Branding Photography?

I am totally happy to encourage, and to help, you to explore and create images for your brand!

With a little creativity and the right tools, you can take stunning DIY branding photos - on your phone, so here are some reasons to do it:

  • Cost-Effective: DIY photography is a great way to save pennies, especially when you're just starting out.

  • You Have Complete Creative Control: When you take your own photos, you have complete control over the theme, composition, lighting, and overall look.

  • Authenticity Is King: DIY photos can give your brand a more authentic and personal feel, especially for story-telling!

Experiment with lighting and posing!

Branding Photography is far from an easy job but if you are happy to improvise in order to hit the ground running, as you establish your business, you can do it!

There are some basic principles to follow:

  1. Lighting is THE key: Natural light is often the best option for product and self photography. Try shooting near a window or outside on a cloudy day.

  2. Composition matters: Pay attention to the composition of your photos. Get to know, and use, the Rule Of Thirds to create appealing images.

  3. Choose Unfussy Backgrounds: Keep your backgrounds simple and clutter-free. A plain white or light-coloured background can help your products stand out.

  4. Use Props: Props can add interest and context to your photos. For example, if you're selling coffee mugs, you could photograph them with a cup of coffee and a book.

  5. Basic Editing: A little editing can go a long way, so use a basic photo editing app like Canva or Adobe Lightroom to adjust brightness, contrast, and colour.

Affordable Equipment and Tools

You don't need to invest in expensive equipment! Your mobile phone or a basic camera are perfect for DIY Branding.

No, you absolutely should not invest thousands on a camera, backdrops, and lighting - unless you are setting up a studio! Even then, we have all started small - I started with a load of second hand equipment, in my living room, with a white sheet for backdrop…

Here’s a very small list of equipment which will work perfect for you:

  • Your Smartphone: Modern smartphones have excellent cameras and are perfect for DIY photography.

  • Invest In a Basic Tripod: A tripod will help you keep your photos steady and avoid blurry images.

  • Lighting Kit: If you need more control over your lighting, consider investing in a small lighting kit - And they often come with a tripod, so two birds-one stone!

  • White backdrop: A white backdrop can help your products stand out and create a professional look, but you can always use a wall and keep it even more budget-friendly.

DIY Branding Photo Ideas

Product Photography can be as simple as you want!

Branding Photography goes beyond selfies!

If you are ever stuck for ideas on what to photograph, beyond yourself, make a note of these and refer back when you need inspiration:

  • Product Shots: Showcase your products from different angles and give customers a complete view.

  • Behind-The-Scenes Photos: This is one of the best story-telling ways to showcase your brand. Give your audience a peek into your business, by sharing photos of your workspace, your day at work, and your team.

  • Lifestyle Shots: Show how your products are used in real-life. For example, if you sell clothing, photograph people wearing or handling them.

  • Flat Lay Photography: Create visually engaging flat lay compositions featuring your products with other items.

I do hope you have found these tips helpful, and by following them, and experimenting with different techniques, you can create great DIY branding photos that will help your business stand out.

Remember, practice makes perfect, so don't be afraid to try new things and have fun with it!

And when you are in a position to hire a professional photographer to create some more sophisticated images, you will already have a good stock of branding photography to add to!
